Situated 38 miles north of downtown Chicago and covering an area of 7.6 square miles, the village of Vernon Hills has seen a rapid increase in its population in recent years. The current population of the Lake County suburb is 20,120 (2000). It contains plentiful shopping, excellent schools, an abundance of recreational opportunities, and beautiful homes, some of which afford views of golf courses and lakes. Single-family homes in Vernon Hills are generally large and nicely landscaped. Most homes have at least three bedrooms, and five or more bedrooms is not uncommon. Amenities include beautiful golf course and/or water views, water frontage and golf frontage. Undeveloped lots are also available for custom-built homes. Vernon Hills is the home of the Cuneo Museum, a converted mansion that was built in 1914 by Samuel Insull, founder of the Commonwealth Edison Company. He purchased the mansion in 1937 after the collapse of the Insull utility empire. Cuneo was the founder of the Cuneo Press and Hawthorn Mellody Dairy. The mansion remained in the family until the death of Cuneo's widow in 1990, and is now an art museum. Part of the 1997 film, My Best Friend's Wedding, starring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, was filmed at the mansion. Shopping is plentiful in Vernon Hills, and many residents of nearby communities take advantage of the village's abundant shopping opportunities. These include Hawthorn Hills Fashion Square, at the southwest corner of Route 60 and Milwaukee Avenue; Hawthorn Village Commons, on the northeast corner of Route 60 and Lakeview Parkway; MarketPlace, which is south of Rivertree Court on Milwaukee Avenue; Townline Commons, on the southeast corner of route 60 and Fairway Drive; Vernon Plaza, on the southeast corner of Route 60 and Aspen Drive, and Westfield Hawthorn shopping center on the northeast corner of Route 60 and Milwaukee Avenue. For recreation, residents can partake in the many activities offered by the Vernon Hills Park District. Facilities include playgrounds, outdoor skating rinks, numerous ball fields and seven picnic areas. Villagers can also play a round of golf at the nine-hole Vernon Hills Golf Course or at White Deer Run Golf Club, situated on the Cuneo estate; have some fun at the Family Aquatic Center; and spend some time at the 184-acre Vernon Hills Athletic Complex.
