Home of the Tweeter Center, a well-known 27,500-seat venue that showcases top musical acts, the village of Tinley Park is conveniently located near Interstate 80, Interstate 57, the Tri-State Tollway, and the Stevenson Expressway. It boasts a wide selection of housing, a great deal of industrial growth in recent years and plentiful shopping. The village is located in Cook County, 29 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, and 35 minutes away from Midway Airport. The population of Tinley Park is 48,401 (2000). The town's population has increased dramatically in recent years; as a result, Tinley Park students are now served by five elementary school districts and four high school districts. Within the boundaries of Tinley Park, there are 13 elementary schools, three junior highs and two high schools. Most students in grades K-8 attend schools in Tinley Park school districts 146 and Kirby 140, or Arbor Park 145 in Oak Forest. Two other districts- 159 in Matteson and Summit Hill 161 in Frankfort- serve families residing in the southern portions of Tinley Park. All school districts emphasize the basics, provide a nurturing environment for students and encourage parental involvement. There are also several private and parochial schools in the area, as well as daycare, preschool and kindergarten facilities. High school students attend a number of schools in various districts; the schools offer college preparatory courses, general academic studies and comprehensive vocational education programs. A number of community colleges are nearby; these include Moraine Valley, Prairie State, Joliet Junior College, and South Suburban Community College. Nearby four-year colleges include DePaul University, Robert Morris College, the College of St. Francis, Lewis University, Governors State University, and Trinity College. A large number of new housing subdivisions have been constructed in recent years in Tinley Park. There are also a fair number of townhouses and condominiums in the village as well. The historic downtown district has been renovated, and includes a new park and a mix of homes, retail outlets and local businesses. The proposed multi-million dollar North Street Project would include 100 condos, retail establishments and an 11-screen movie theater. There are 40 parks in Tinley Park that offer abundant recreational opportunities. Hiking and cross country trails are plentiful; in their leisure time, villagers can also visit the White Water Canyon water park, a miniature golf course, the Tinley Park Health Club and the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center.
