Located in Kane County, 37 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the village of Elgin is located next to Elgin, its sister city, and adjacent to the scenic Fox River, which flows right through the center of town. Fishing in the river is popular, and recreation enthusiasts can also hike and bike alongside the river, go boating, or enjoy a picnic on the river banks. The South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department offers further recreational opportunities, and residents can also spend their leisure time in various parks located throughout the village; these parks feature ball fields, picnic areas and other amenities. There are also dozens of golf courses in the area and tennis courts are plentiful. The current population of Elgin is approximately 18,000. South Elgin is located 30 minutes away from O'Hare International Airport and 45 minutes from Chicago's Midway Airport. DuPage County Airport located six miles south of town serves the needs of local aircraft, and Chicago commuters use Metra rail service, which makes stops at stations in nearby Elgin and Bartlett. Residents also use the Northwest Tollway, I-90, to reach Chicago, and local PACE buses also provide convenient transportation. As the population of South Elgin has dramatically increased in recent years, so has the amount of housing that's been constructed. The Thornwood housing development located west of Randall Road features more than 1,000 single-family homes, 300 townhomes, 164 acres of wetlands, a large number of retail stores, and a recreation center. Older brick and frame houses are also available within the village, as are condominiums and apartment rental units. To do their shopping, residents can visit the various shops located at the intersection of McLean Boulevard and Spring Street. They can also go to Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles, Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, Stratford Square Shopping Center in Bloomingdale, and Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. Two of the finest school systems in Illinois are located in the area: St. Charles Community Unit School District #303 and U-46 Public School System. Students can also attend classes at Elgin Community College, and at Roosevelt University, which has a campus in Schaumburg.
