Covering four square miles, it offers lush, wooded surroundings, and beautiful residential properties that feature spacious lots, considerable acreage, and in some cases, waterfront views. There are a variety of housing styles including rustic, Tudor, French provincial, colonial and Cape Cod, and some homes have added amenities such as multiple fireplaces, swimming pools and saunas. Well-preserved twentieth century residences are on the market, as are newly constructed luxury estates. Condominiums and townhomes are rare. Nearby communities include Deerfield, Lincolnshire and Bannockburn. Four elementary school districts and two high school districts serve the students of Riverwoods. Most of the town is situated within Deerfield Elementary District #109, which has an enrollment of 2,880 students, and Township High School District #113, which has an enrollment of 2,847 in two schools: Deerfield and Stevenson High Schools. There are also several parochial and private schools in the surrounding communities. Riverwoods is located at Deerfield Road between Illinois Route 21 and Interstate 94. The Tri-State Tollway (I-294) is close by. To reach downtown Chicago, residents can board a Metra train in nearby Deerfield; the trip takes about 48 minutes (39 minutes express). O'Hare International Airport is 20 miles away. In their spare time, villagers can take advantage of the park district facilities maintained by the suburb of Deerfield, which include a community center, parks and playgrounds, two swimming pools, tennis courts, and an 18-hole golf course. They can also visit the Riverwoods Wildlife Preserve and Ryerson Conservation area, and enjoy a day at Six Flags Great America, located about 20 miles away in north suburban Gurnee. Shopping is limited in Riverwoods, but there is a small shopping plaza on Milwaukee Avenue. Residents can also take advantage of shopping opportunities in nearby Deerfield.
