The population of the Cook County suburb is 12,561(2005).Though Midway Airport is close by, rolling, wooded terrain gives Palos Heights a quiet, country atmosphere that makes it an ideal place to live and work. The community boasts beautiful forest preserves, a variety of housing styles and a number of recreational activities from which to choose. Villagers can visit the 158-acre Lake Katherine Nature Preserve, which contains hiking trails, a lake, a waterfall, an ice skating pond, a wetland restoration project, and other attractions. Golfing is available, and the Palos Heights Recreation Department offers leisure-time activities, including swimming at an Olympic-size pool. Residential lots in Palos Heights are a quarter-acre in size or larger; housing runs the gamut from colonials, Tudors, ranches, and condominiums to upscale executive housing that's surrounded by scenic forest preserves. The town's earliest homes line streets east and west of Harlem Avenue. South of this area, homes are newer and increase in size. There is also housing that overlooks the Lake Katherine Nature Preserve. The newest development in Palos Heights is Westgate Valley, comprised of single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. There are plenty of cultural activities that Palos Heights residents can enjoy. They can visit the Palos Heights Public Library, located a few doors off of Harlem Avenue, and also take advantage of the many cultural events at Moraine Valley Community College in nearby Palos Hills. The Tweeter Center in nearby Tinley Park hosts top musical acts, and art lovers can visit the National Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University. Located in University Park, the Park's collection of 22 outdoor sculptures is regarded as among the finest in the world.
