Oak Lawn is a community with quality schools, a stable tax base, and plentiful recreational activities. In recent years, a number of single-family homes have been built in Oak Lawn; a large number of condominiums and townhomes have also been constructed during the past few years. Many of the village's long-time residents have resided in Oak Lawn for decades, living in brick bungalows, ranch-style homes, tri-levels, and bi-level housing. Midway Airport is three miles away; O'Hare International Airport is 35 minutes away. For shopping, residents can visit Oak Lawn's retail corridor, which is concentrated along 95th Street between Pulaski Road and Ridgeland Avenue. They can also drive to Evergreen Plaza shopping center at 95th Street and Western Avenue; the shopping center contains a Carson Pirie Scott store, other anchor stores, and smaller retail establishments. The Oak Lawn Park District offers playgrounds, ball fields, picnic facilities, 24 outdoor tennis courts, three outdoor swimming pools, an indoor multi-recreational facility, an indoor ice arena, an indoor tennis and racquetball club, and a new golf course.
