The Edens and Tri-State Expressways are nearby, and commuters can board a Metra train in Northbrook for a 40-minute ride into downtown Chicago. Pace buses also provide transportation to Northbrook Court, the train station and the surrounding suburbs. The population of Northbrook is 33,435. To do their shopping, residents can visit the Village Square shopping center or Northbrook Court, which contains numerous anchor stores such as Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Lord \& Taylor, as well as movie theatres, restaurants and smaller specialty shops. The village's housing stock contains many older homes that were constructed between the 1950s and 1970s, as well as newer, custom-built residences.
