Located 15 miles north of downtown Chicago in Cook County, the multi-ethnic village of Niles has long been known for its excellent shopping, many recreational opportunities and its programs for senior citizens. The town covers an area of six square miles; neighboring suburbs include Morton Grove to the north, Skokie to the east, and Park Ridge and Des Plaines to the west. The population of Niles is 30,068 (2000.) One distinctive landmark in Niles is the "Leaning Tower" on Touhy Avenue, which was built in 1934, and stands in front of the Tower YMCA. Located only 15 minutes from O'Hare International Airport, the Leaning Tower is a replica of Italy's famed Leaning Tower of Pisa. It stands 94 feet and leans about seven feet four inches off center. Niles maintains a strong industrial and commercial base, which includes over 1,300 businesses that range from small companies to Fortune 500 firms. At the same time, the village provides its residents with a host of services. Newcomers are warmly welcomed into the community, and they're provided with free bus service that transports them – at no charge- to all major shopping centers and public facilities in town. Elevated trains, commuter trains, buses and nearby roadways, including the Kennedy and Edens Expressways, also provide transportation for many residents. In terms of shopping, there is convenient access to several area shopping centers including Golf Mill Mall at Golf Road and Milwaukee Avenue, Four Flags, and the Village Crossing shopping center on Touhy Avenue. In their spare time, villagers have a variety of recreational opportunities from which to choose; many are offered by the Niles Park District, which offers year-round activities. Tam Golf Course is a nine-hole golf course located on a branch of the Chicago River; it features a large putting green, golf lessons and a pro shop. The Park District also maintains an indoor ice skating rink, lighted tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, softball and baseball fields, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, batting cages, and miniature golf. Golf Main Park District also services a small section of Niles. It, too, offers a wide array of athletic and recreational activities. The housing stock in Niles is comprised of ranch-style homes, split-levels, Cape Cods, colonials and Georgians. Townhouses, apartments and condominiums are plentiful. Prices for single-family homes start at just under $300,000 for many three-bedroom homes, with prices up to the mid-$700,000s for five and six-bedroom properties.
