Maywood is a suburb in Cook County that's located 11 miles west of downtown Chicago. It boasts outstanding medical facilities, excellent leisure-time activities and moderately priced housing. Covering 2.7 square miles, Maywood has a population of 26,987 (2000), and sits adjacent to the Eisenhower Expressway. A Metra train from the Maywood station transports commuters into downtown Chicago in about 25 minutes. Maywood is the home of Loyola University Health System, a nationally-recognized medical institution known for its care and research in cancer, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, pediatrics, neonatology, neurological sciences, burn and trauma care, and organ transplantation. A Level 1 Trauma Center, Loyola serves patients from Chicago's western suburbs and beyond. For recreation, residents can join the Loyola Center for Health and Fitness that's affiliated with Loyola University Health System. The modern facility features an Internet café, massage and spa amenities, an aerobic studio and gymnasium, a pool, basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts, and a variety of exercise classes. In their spare time, residents can also visit Maywood Park on North Avenue, which offers year-round harness racing, and Kiddieland, an amusement Park that sits across the street from Maywood Park on North Avenue in neighboring Melrose Park. Other leisure-time options include taking out some books from the Maywood Public Library on South Fifth Avenue, shopping at the village's Walgreen's drugstore or at Winston Plaza Shopping Center in Melrose Park, or signing up for any number of classes that are offered by the Maywood Recreation Department. Maywood contains moderately-priced, well-kept homes. The housing stock is comprised primarily of single-family residences- some historically significant- and numerous apartment rental units. Townhouses and condominiums are rare. There are a number of public and private elementary and middle schools in Maywood. Many high school students attend Proviso East High School on First Avenue. Nearby colleges include Triton College in River Grove, Wilbur Wright College in Chicago, Morton College in Cicero, and Elmhurst College in Elmhurst.
