A small town that's known for its charming turn-of-the-century homes, quaint shops and winding streets, the village of Lake Bluff is situated 33 miles north of downtown Chicago in Lake County. Once a bustling resort town, the town covers approximately four square miles and has over 6,000 residents. It has its own train station, and is bordered by Lake Michigan on the east, the Great Lakes Naval Base to the north, Lake Forest to the south, and unincorporated Lake County to the west. Lake Bluff was incorporated in 1895. The village's housing stock is comprised of stately Victorians, renovated farmhouses, colonials, ranches, and split-level residences. Multi-million dollar lakefront properties tend to be situated on the north and south ends of land adjacent to Lake Michigan. For shopping, residents can take advantage of a thriving two-block downtown shopping district that contains roughly 30 shops. They can also visit the town's Carriage Way shopping center, located at Routes 43 and 176. In their leisure time, villagers can visit the well-stocked Lake Bluff Public Library on Scranton Avenue, see some beautiful plants and foliage at the town's annual Garden Market, view a variety of birds at the Ravine Park and Wetlands, or join any number of community organizations including the Lake Bluff Women's Club, which offers activities such as potluck dinners and book discussions. Lake Bluff also boasts nine parks, an 18-hole golf course, a Lake Michigan beach, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Younger elementary education students attend District 65, which offers special education, gifted courses and programs for children with special needs. Teens attend the highly-regarded Lake Forest High School, which had an average 2000 ACT composite score of 25.0.
