A dynamic, growing community straddling both Cook and DuPage Counties, Hanover Park lies 27 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and 17 miles from O'Hare International Airport. Once known as Ontarioville, the village has a population of 38,000, covers nearly five square miles, and boasts good shopping and recreational opportunities, quality education, and an excellent library system. To do their shopping, residents can visit one of 17 area shopping centers, ranging in size from 6,000 to over 200,000 square feet. One of these shopping districts is the Tradewinds Shopping Center on the northeast corner of Irving Park and Barrington Roads. Hanover Park's schools provide a quality education for students of all ages. The town is served by seven K-12 school districts and several high schools; higher education opportunities are provided by various area colleges including College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Elgin Community College, William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Hanover Park has two library districts, each of which has a single branch facility within the village. The Poplar Creek Branch Library offers reading and educational materials for adults and children including a variety of books, periodicals, videos and compact disks. The branch also offers book discussion groups, a storytime for children, young adult programming, and a paperback book exchange. The Schaumburg Township District Branch Library is primarily for children. It features unique dinosaur, constellation and Egyptian displays, plus a castle where children can spend many hours. Also offered is an afternoon storytime hour, computers with educational software and a summer reading program. Hanover Park is comprised of three park districts: Bartlett, Hanover Park and Schaumburg Park Districts; the majority of Hanover Park is within the Hanover Park district. The Hanover Park District maintains 21 park sites encompassing 128 acres. Facilities include 10 outdoor tennis courts, four racquetball courts, two swimming pools, four football fields, four recreation buildings, three outdoor ice rinks, fourteen softball fields, eight soccer fields, 12 basketball courts, and 19 picnic areas. During the winter, snow-covered hills and ponds are available for sledding and ice skating. The Centre Court Athletic Club features six indoor tennis courts, four racquetball courts, and a 2,400-square-foot fitness center with the latest Cybex resistance and Stairmaster cardiovascular equipment, as well as a pro shop, tanning beds, whirlpool and sauna facilities, and childcare service. A leisure-time activity that Hanover Park residents look forward to each year is Harvest Fest, which takes place over Labor Day weekend. The event features big-name entertainment and food booths, and attracts about 40,000 people.
