Located 23 miles west of downtown Chicago in DuPage County, the picturesque community of Glen Ellyn boasts excellent schools, unique restaurants and shops, numerous recreational facilities, and a broad range of housing styles and prices.
The population of Glen Ellyn is 26,999 (2000). The Glen Ellyn Public Library is housed in a modern facility that has a collection of 140,000 items. Programs for adults and children are offered throughout the year, including a monthly book discussion group for adults.
The Glen Ellyn Park District oversees 29 parks, tennis courts, a 36-hole miniature golf course, and a pool, and offers over 400 programs a year. The "crown jewel" of the park system is Lake Ellyn, a 15-acre lake created in 1899. There, villagers can go sailing in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The Willowbrook Wildlife Haven is another popular destination, and Hidden Lake Forest Preserve offers additional recreational opportunities.
In their leisure time, residents can also see a performance of the renowned Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus, or visit the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage; the Center is home to five resident companies including The DuPage Opera Theatre, The Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, The New Classic Singers Ensemble, and the New Philharmonic Symphony.
Other leisure-time opportunities include attending the annual Taste of Glen Ellyn, visiting the Farmer's Market in the summertime, and going to the Festival of the Arts event each August. Glen Ellyn students attend school in elementary districts 89 and 41, and high schools in Glenbard District 87, the third largest high school district in Illinois.
The College of DuPage is also located in the village, and nearby technical schools, colleges and universities include the DeVry DuPage campus, Elmhurst College, the Illinois Institute of Technology Rice campus, The National College of Chiropractic, and National-Louis University.
Housing is diverse in Glen Ellyn in terms of styles and prices. Housing styles include newer colonials and split-levels as well as older Victorians and Cape Cods. Newer custom-built homes and condominiums are also available.
