The charming village of Geneva is known as the "Jewel of the Fox" (River) because of its unique assortment of shops and antique dealers. The county seat of Kane County, it contains a 69-block historic district that features a variety of homes built from 1838 on; these include Queen Anne and Greek revival-style residences, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, bungalows, Cape Cods, and shingle-style homes.
These historic homes are protected under Geneva's historic preservation ordinance, and cannot be demolished without the consent of the town's historic commission. Geneva is located in eastern Kane County, 45 minutes from downtown Chicago, between Batavia, which is located to the south, and St. Charles, situated to the north. The Northwest Tollway and East-West Tollway are nearby. Commuters can travel into Chicago's Loop in about 50 minutes by boarding a train at the Geneva station. Geneva covers 8.6 square miles; its population as of 2000, was 19,515.
In their spare time, villagers can attend Geneva's popular annual festival and fairs including the Geneva Arts Fair, Festival of the Vine and mid-summer's Swedish Days; attend the Kane County Flea Market in nearby St. Charles, and go shopping at the upscale Geneva Commons shopping mall, which contains stores such as Ann Taylor, Crate and Barrel, Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, and many other well-known retailers.
They can also spend a day at 395-acre Peck Farm Park, which boasts a nature center, gardens, nature and bike trails, a picnic area, baseball diamond, soccer fields, a 19-acre lake and other amenities; get some exercise at the Geneva Park District's Skate Park; play some golf at Stone Creek Miniature Golf facility in Wheeler Park; enjoy a play at the Delorra A. Norris Cultural Arts Center in nearby St. Charles; and take swimming lessons with the Geneva Park District. br>
The Geneva Community Center on Western Avenue also offers a variety of classes including dance, fitness, tumbling, martial arts, and other types of programs. Single-family detached homes in Geneva are available from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million dollars for large estate homes.
