The town is about 40 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. One famous reference to the village of Elwood was made in the well-known Blues Brothers movie. Elwood Blues, brother to Joliet Jake Blues, and played by actor Dan Akroyd, seems to have been named in honor of Elwood, Illinois.
In terms of education, 88.6 percent of residents age 25 and older have attended high school. Students living in Elwood attend one elementary school, one middle school and one high school in Elwood C C School District 203. The mission statement of the school district reads as follows: "Elwood School District #203, through a cooperative effort of school, home, and community is committed to excellence while providing a safe and stimulating environment, which enables children to learn strong academic skills, citizenship, mutual respect, and a sense of self-worth."
According to 2000 U.S. Census figures, the median house value is $132,300, and about 83 percent of the housing units in Elwood are owner-occupied. Housing in the village tends to be newer construction. For shopping, residents can visit Elwood Food Shop on Mississippi Street, Miss Deb's Friend and Flowers store on Route 53, and the Marycrest Shopping Center in Joliet.
