Located in the heart of the scenic Fox River Valley in Kane County, Carpentersville sits 35 miles northwest of Chicago. It is bordered by Barrington Hills to the east and Algonquin to the north. Carpentersville's population is more than 34,000, and it covers 7.5 square miles. The suburb contains plentiful old and new housing.
Older housing includes ranches and tri-levels; newer housing includes modern single-family homes and townhomes. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the median price of a single-family home in Carpentersville is $116,300.
There is plenty for Carpentersville residents to do in their spare time. For example, they can visit the former Meadowdale Raceway at the intersection of Illinois Route 31 and Huntley Road. The popular attraction closed in the late 1960s, and in 1994, a group of local park districts purchased part of the raceway land to use as a new forest preserve. In 2002, the remainder of the site was purchased, and today, the site, known as Raceway Woods, contains a forest and nature preserve and a recreational area known as Raceway Woods.
Residents can also play a round of golf at the 18-hole Bonnie Dundee Golf Course, take their families to the Dolphin Cove Family Aquatic Center featuring a playground, outdoor pool, volleyball courts and a picnic area, visit the Randall Oaks Petting Park and Petting Zoo, and bike and jog along the beautiful Fox River Trail. They can also head on over to the cultural center at nearby Elgin Community College and attend a dance or musical performance.
There are more than one-half dozen public primary and middle schools in Carpentersville. Students can also attend the private Rainbow Castle School on Barrington Avenue. High school-aged students attend Dundee-Crown High School.
For shopping, residents visit Meadowdale Shopping Center, built in 1957, and one of the area's first malls; Spring Hill Mall in nearby West Dundee, and the Randall Road shopping area.
