The newest Chicago-area home of home furnishing giant Ikea, which opened in September, 2005, Bolingbrook is a fairly new community that lies in both Will and DuPage Counties. It got its start in the early 1960s when Dover Construction Company laid out the first housing tract in the farm fields just north of U.S. 66 and beside Illinois Route 53.
Homes were priced at $10,000, with as little as $200 down. The first homes ready for families to move into were on Avondale Court, just west of Route 53 and north of Briarcliff Road. In 1965, the village was incorporated and the population of Bolingbrook was 5,300.
Today, more than 40 years later, Bolingbrook's population has grown to more than 70,000. It has one airport, Clow International Airport, and is home to the Boughton Ridge Golf Course, a 9-hole course owned by the Bolingbrook Park District, and the Bolingbrook Golf Club, a municipal facility that includes an 18-hole course.
For recreation, residents can also head on over to the Bolingbrook Acquatic Center, which opened in 1982, and was the first indoor wave pool in the United States, or visit the Bolingbrook Health and Racquet Club. They can also relax in the town's more than two dozen parks or visit the village's nature center. Residents can go see a movie or concert at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center on West Briarcliff Road, or become involved in the village's more than 30 groups and associations: everything from the Friends of the Library and Bolingbrook Garden Club to the Bolingbrook Rotary Club.
Most of Bolingbrook lies within the boundaries of Valley View School District 365U and Fountaindale Public Library District. There are 12 elementary schools in the community, four middle schools, and two high schools. In 2006, the women's basketball team from Bolingbrook High School won the Class AA championship. Bolingbrook has single-family homes for sale to fit every budget, including ranches, Tudor residences and modern homes.
