Westborough, located in central Massachusetts, is a community that offers a mix of residential, industrial and open space. The town is just 12 miles east of Worcester and 29 miles west of Boston with direct access to major highway arteries Route 9 and Massachusetts Turnpike Route 90, as well as to Interstate 495. The towns commuter rail station provides service to Downtown Boston and Worcester. Proximity of cities and highways makes Westborough an ideal bedroom community. Additionally, the town's own suburban character of single family homes on tree-lined streets, attracts new residents.
Businesses also favor locating their facilities in Westborough due to its position along major roads. Westborough holds the distinction of being the 100th town in Massachusetts to become incorporated. Since its milestone founding in 1717, Westborough has grown from a settlement of orchards and dairies into a thriving community of residences, wooded trails, and industry. Major growth first came in 1834 when railroad lines were constructed to link the town with other communities. Soon Westborough saw diversified manufacturing activity that produced sleighs, straw hats, and boots.
Today, this activity has evolved with technology to encompass pharmaceuticals and computer telecommunications equipment. Westborough has also become a regional hub for office development, with thirty-five percent of its employment devoted to the service sector. Westborough's 14,000 residents live spread out over roughly 20 square miles of town and the community's largest investment is its young people. The town boasts an exceptional school district comprising four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.
Additionally, the town recreation department oversees an array of youth sports activities. For the population in general, Westborough's local government provides other municipal services and amenities including full-time police and fire protection, a public library and wastewater treatment. This desirable suburban community close to the commercial and cultural hub cities of Massachusetts has a wide assortment of homes.
