Commuters are attracted to Walpole due to its access to roads such as 1, 1A and 27. Also, there are commuter rail and bus lines with direct service to Downtown Boston. Within Walpole are numerous natural and community assets as well. Walpole's many municipal services include water, sewer, recreation, parks, public works, police, fire and a public library.
Walpole's school system consists of four elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school, all providing excellent educational services to the youth of Walpole. The town recreation department, housed in the handsome Greek revival style Blackburn Hall oversees numerous year-round youth sports and activities.
Walpole's long history began in the late 17th century with a settlement along the Postal Road that linked New Hampshire to Baltimore, Maryland with mail service. A collection of sawmills comprised what is now Walpole and in 1724, this fledgling community incorporated as a town. The town took its name to honor the Prime Minister of England, Sir Robert Walpole. The local landscape of marshland proved a rich supply of bog iron at Great Cedar Swamp and water power was cultivated along the Neponset River that falls 151 feet in Walpole. These resources attracted industry to the community and ensured its steady growth.
Today, Walpole is an attractive community of single-family homes in a variety of styles, settings and features. Modest starter homes, handsome colonials set on shaded lots and impressive large-scale new constructions all make up the diverse housing stock of Walpole.
