Stoughton is a suburban community 17 miles southeast of Boston and also in proximity to Providence, Rhode Island. Besides the economic opportunity offered by these nearby cities, Stoughton also contains its own local commercial activity of family-owned and large businesses. The Stoughton Technology Center contains the world headquarters for a major manufacturer of footwear. This community is attractive to both new residents and businesses due in part to highway and rail access. Route 24 passes through town and Interstates 93 and 95 are close by. Additionally, Stoughton is linked to Downtown Boston by MBTA commuter train.
Stoughton's 27,000 residents can enjoy a variety of recreational activities. Cedar Hill Golf Course is a 9-hole Par 33 Golf course owned and operated by the Town of Stoughton. The facility has a stocked golf shop, bar and restaurant, and a practice putting green. The Stoughton Recreation Department manages a number of programs offering outdoor activities for young people. Facilities include new playgrounds at all six elementary schools and the West School Athletic Complex, a twelve acre complex of softball, soccer, and baseball fields with a walking/jogging path.
Once renovated, Halloran Park will feature lighted walking paths, a picnic area, horseshoe pit, basketball court and open grass area for passive recreation. The high school complex features a skateboard park. Also, outdoor basketball courts are located at each elementary school. Other recreation facilities used by local organizations include: the Pop Warner Football Field, Mens Slo-Pitch Field, Youth Soccer Fields and the Little League Complex.
Another notable asset in Stoughton is its public library. In addition to its own collection, Stoughton Public Library offers its patrons access to the resources of twenty-five other member libraries in the Old Colony Network. Stoughton's library is housed in a modern building that also contains an art collection in the Dorothy Woodward Gallery and the library sponsors children's, teen and adult programs. With a wealth of cultural and recreational offerings, Stoughton is a vibrant community. Housing stock in Stoughton is diverse.
