Pembroke is a scenic rural town on the South Shore, approximately 30 miles south of Boston. The town's proximity to highways and to neighboring communities with direct train service to Downtown Boston offer Pembroke residents a convenient commute. Towns bordering Pembroke include Hanover, Norwell, and Marshfield on the north; Duxbury on the east; Kingston, Plympton and Halifax on the south; and Hanson on the west. Additionally Pembroke is 14 miles east of Brockton and 16 miles north of historic Plymouth. Cape Cod with its tempting beaches and summer destinations is also a short drive south along Route 3.
However, one need not leave Pembroke to appreciate the assets of the area. Natural beauty is particularly striking here. Visitors come to Pembroke for swimming, boating and fishing at the town's water features that include five ponds and a herring run. This typical small New England town has a charming town center of well-maintained antique buildings that showcase the local history since the town was first founded in 1712.
Today, Pembroke is governed by a board of selectmen and open town meeting. These bodies oversee a number of local services such Pembroke's well-regarded public school system of four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Additionally the Silver Lake Regional Middle School that serves Pembroke and surrounding communities is located within the town. Pembroke's 14,000 residents live spread out over roughly 21 square miles of town. Despite its small town character, Pembroke still provides a surprisingly wide array of municipal services that also include a public library, recreation department, water, police and fire protection.
