Millis is a suburban industrial town in the Charles River Valley, 15 miles southwest of Boston. The community's long history dates back as early as 1658 when colonists engaged in farming and grazing settled the town. Shortly afterward in 1662, the first mill was built on Bogestow Pond. Growth was halted by native uprisings during King Philips War when nearly every town dwelling was burned. Only one structure, a fortified stone house survived. The town rebuilt and began growing again through the 18th century as the local economy expanded from mere farming to small-scale manufacturing at a number of mills and commercial locations.
Millis residents consisted of farmers as well as tavern keepers and proprietors of saw and grist mills. Industry expanded further in the 19th century with the advent of cotton and paper mills, and factories that produced pipe organs, bricks, shoes and canned goods. Among the notable operations in Millis during this industrial heyday was the Cliquot Club ginger ale plant. Millis, which had spent time as a district of Dedham, and then Medway, eventually incorporated as an independent town in 1885.
Today, Millis is largely residential with many architectural remnants of its long history. The town retains quite a few bungalow-style houses as well as some Greek Revival and Italianate buildings. Most homes though are of more recent construction and represent traditional colonial and cape, as well as contemporary ranch styles. Residents can take advantage of an array of municipal services including the town's public school system. There is a preschool, elementary school, middle school and high school all within Millis. Additionally, students may elect to attend a nearby regional vocational and technical high school.
