Marshfield has a long history, stretching back to the colonial era. One notable town native was Daniel Webster, whose birthplace is in Marshfield and after whom the Daniel Webster School is named. This school is among Marshfield's five public elementary schools. Additional schools in the town's school system include a middle school and high school. The school department as well as other high quality municipal services such as public safety, recreation, the public library, senior center, water and sewer, and trash removal are provided by the town's three-member board of selectmen form of government.
The town government, also run by open meeting is active in revitalizing the downtown area. This lively community, blessed with both coastal and inland beauty, comes alive particularly during special events such as the yearly Marshfield Fair that attracts visitors from all over the area. Duxbury to the south, Pembroke and Norwell to the west, and Scituate to the north are the towns that surround Marshfield.
