Haverhill, a city that grew as a vital industrial center, is located in northeastern Massachusetts on the Merrimack River. The mills here drew immigrants who made Haverhill a city rich in diversity. Established in 1640 as Pentucket, Haverhill was incorporated as a city in 1870. Although originally settled as farmland, the area turned its focus to the river and developed saw and grist mills in the late 17th century, tanneries and boat yards in the early 18th century and later, shoe manufacturing, its leading industry for 180 years.
The city has turned its focus again, this time to computer technology and research industries that are found within Haverhills seven industrial parks, business districts, and newly revitalized central business district. Many handsome buildings remain in this business districts which is marked by a fine example of Queen Anne industrial cityscape architecture. High style Victorian and urban middle class homes of early 20th century construction abound in Haverhill.
Downtown, there is also a restaurant district with eateries and specialty shops. Along the river, is the former rural shipbuilding village, Bradford Common. The city has a variety of recreational amenities, such as four 18-hole golf courses, a downhill ski area, two horseback riding academies, a public skating rink and a sailing program. The Merrimack River runs past the city, providing walking, jogging, boating and bird watching. A growing population of bald eagles along the Merrimack River can be counted among Haverhill's residents.
Haverhill is situated in northern Essex County and bordered by the towns of Methuen on the west, Groveland and Boxford on the south, West Newbury on the east, and the State of New Hampshire on the north. Haverhill contains almost 36 square miles of area and a wide variety of land uses, ranging from rural agricultural areas to urban areas such as the citys historical industrial center.
