Avon, a desirable suburban, just 17 miles south of Boston holds the distinction of being the smallest community in land area and in population of any community in the region. This prestigious community is a major employment center on the South Shore. The Avon Industrial Park contains 127 firms that employ over 3,600 persons in a variety of industries. Though the complex has continued to grow through recent years, it is separate from nearby residential areas.
Situated along Route 24 and near major highways arteries such as Interstates 93 and 495, Avon is also served by public transportation. The Brockton Area Transit Authority and the MBTA provide convenient public transit service to Boston and Brockton. Public transit and proximity to highways are important assets of the town.
In an effort to preserve the suburban character of Avon, the town has enacted policies to limit new housing development in the community. Excellent community facilities and services are available, including Avon's own high quality school district. Several civic groups also draw membership and active participation from the community. Avon residents can choose from a cultural council, civic association and garden club. There is also a public library with a large circulating collection and high tech-facilities.
A variety of youth and family sports activities is overseen by Avon's Parks and Recreation Department. The department organizes winter ski trips to New Hampshire. Additionally, the town offers several special events throughout the year including a Memorial Day parade, Christmas concert and crafts fair. Towns and cities neighboring this tranquil, yet easily accessible community include: Brockton, Stoughton, Randolph and Holbrook. Avon is just one of many vibrant and unique towns that make up the South Shore.
