Arlington, a suburban community, just minutes from Boston is where the American Revolution began. On April 19, 1775, the first day of fighting, Minutemen converged on Arlington, then called Menotomy, to ambush British troops making their retreat from Lexington and Concord. The area now called Arlington has a long history and has had several names. First settled in 1635 as the village of Menotomy, it eventually separated from neighboring Cambridge in 1807 and became incorporated as West Cambridge. After the Civil War in 1867, the town's name changed to Arlington in honor of the national cemetery.

With a population of over 42,000, Arlington is served by seven elementary schools one middle school and one high school.
