Located in Howard County, the upscale, rural town of Glenelg is one of Maryland's premier addresses. With less than 2,000 residents, Glenelg's expansive estate style homes feature large, accommodating lots among the bucolic landscape of rolling hills and winding roads.
Although the area has a distinct aura of genteel country sophistication, Glenelg is just moments from I-95 and is easily accessible to the major metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington. Although many of the homes in Glenelg are older and imbued with historic charm, many newer construction custom homes have been built within the past five years, as Howard County has grown in popularity.
Named after a village in rural Scotland, in the 1700's, Glenelg was originally part of a single estate known as Glenelg Manor. After generations of historic residents including the notable Maryland families of the Howards and the Pattersons, Glenelg Manor was divided and the town was slowly constructed. Fortunately, the beautiful manor house has survived and today stands on the majestic campus of Glenelg Country School, a co-ed, non-sectarian private school for kindergarten through twelfth graders.
In keeping with its historic past, the tiny town of Glenelg features numerous antique shops, but more modern items can be found at the nearby Columbia Mall and Westfield Shopping Town. Neighboring Columbia, a large suburban hub, features many options for entertainment including several cinemas, over 100 restaurants, and a number of theatres.
With its lush countryside, top rated Howard County school system, and convenient yet secluded location, Glenelg continues to be an in demand area for new and existing homes. With a median home value over $1 million, property in Glenelg comes at a premium, but all of the town's stunning features make it a worthy investment.
