As unattractive as it may seem to put money into a house that you're planning to sell, the fact is that buyers are notoriously unimaginative when it comes to looking past any major blemishes like a stained carpet or a dirty wall. For some buyers even a gaudy paint color can be a deal breaker. You don't want your buyers to have to envision what the remodeled house will look like if it is in serious need of repair.

The 24 housing markets covered by ZipRealty showed some signs of improvement at the end of January after a soft start to 2014. At the end of January 2014, the median home sales price stood at nearly $260,000, and median sales price growth increased more than an entire percentage point to 12.5% during the month of January year-over-year. In December 2013, annual median home sales price growth was 11.4%.
