1st Annual Greenwood Street Soccer Tournament
PhinneyWood Summer Streets returns this Friday, August 10th, where much of Greenwood Avenue will be closed down for a fun neighborhood block party in the evening hours (6 to 10PM, so be prepared to reroute if you’re driving). Summer Streets features live music, dancing, activities for the kids and so much more. Bring nonperishable food again this year for Seattle’s largest food can pyramid to benefit Greenwood Food Bank, and enjoy the art walk which will spill into the street. If you’re looking for homes in the Greenwood/Phinney area you should definitely make a point to make this part of your Friday plans!
And this year, something new: the first ever Greenwood Street Soccer Tournament! The soccer tournament is presented by Naked City Brewery & Taphouse, The Yard Café, and natural energy drink Golazo. Registration is now full for the event with 92 players divided into 16 teams and competing in two divisions - fun and pro. If you missed the registration this year, no worries, come on out to cheer on your favorite team and see how you can take part next year! If you’re not sure what team to cheer for why not cheer for my team - Anytime Fitness Capitol Hill F.C. (You can’t miss our bright purple uniforms!)
The format of the tournament will be very similar to Futsal, which is a variant of futbol that is played on a much smaller pitch and mainly played indoors on a hard surface. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular soccer ball. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and precision passing in small spaces. The pitch will be 15 yards by 9 yards, consist of two teams each with three players (no goalkeeper) playing a 20 minute game.
“Seattle is one of the greatest soccer cities in the world,” said Naked City’s general manager Bryan Miller. “It was only a matter of time before we had our own major street soccer tournament.” He adds, “The response has been incredible. The City of Seattle has been amazingly helpful with logistics, and The Yard and Golazo are great partners.”
The level of play should be quite high - rumor has it several of the players on the “pro” division are former Sounders, and there will be a cup prize for each division. All the participating players in each division receive a custom team uniform and two complimentary beers!
A big neighborhood event like this wouldn’t be complete without a celebrity referee, so come see former Sounders player Santa Maria Rivera, now a Golazo spokesperson, ref the game. And enjoy music tunes spinned by DJ Dave Newman.
If you’re a fan of the beautiful game (AKA futbol, The World‘s Game) then you don’t want to miss this great event. If you’re not, that’s okay too… but if you’re thinking about purchasing a home in Greenwood you should definitely check out PhinneyWood Summer Streets 2012. It’s everybody’s street. Imagine the possibilities
