Top vacation spots near Sacramento

Though Sacramento has plenty of fun activities for residents of all ages, sometimes it's nice to break the normal routine and get away for a weekend. Homes for sale in Sacramento are situated at a unique point in California - the Pacific Coast is only a couple of hours to the west, while Nevada and several national parks are the same distance to the east. If you have just moved to the area, consider visiting some of the following places for weekend relaxation and fun.

Reno

If you enjoy gambling at casinos, seeing live entertainment and dancing at popular night clubs, Reno is the city for you. While not as famous as Las Vegas to the distant south, Reno is full of establishments that cater to the older crowd. Called the "Biggest Little City in the World," has the feel of a big city while maintaining the feel of a smaller urban area. To access the attractions here, simply drive about 130 miles northeast on Interstate 80.

San Francisco

The Bay Area is about 87 miles to the southwest of Sacramento, and is famous for its historic landmarks and cultural scene. A tourist would likely be unable to see all of the attractions here in a single weekend, so this is a great location for repeat visits. Take a ferry to the famous island of Alcatraz, or enjoy a professional baseball game at AT&T Park or the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Since the city is so close to Sacramento, it would certainly possible to make a day trip instead of a weekend journey. For some of the best dining, tourism and shopping options in Northern California, visit San Francisco.

Lake Tahoe

This is a popular tourist destination year round, as skiing and snowboarding dominate the winter while hiking and water sports take place here in the summer. Drive about 100 miles east on Route 50 to access a number of great facilities, hotels and campgrounds.

Yosemite National Park

The western border of this famous national park is only about 120 miles southeast of downtown Sacramento, and offers some of the best hiking and scenery in the entire United States. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park offers spectacular natural features like Mirror Lake, Yosemite Falls and El Capitan. If your family loves the outdoors, spend a weekend here for a cost-effective mini-vacation.
