K Street gets rebranded 'Kay Street'

The downtown area in most cities is a hotbed of activity. When particular streets or communities in the downtown area are under populated by businesses and people, elected officials in those cities try to turn the neighborhood around by supporting development initiatives. Recent changes to Sacramento's K Street are transforming the once ghost-like area into a thriving community.

City introduces K Street rebranding plan
The Sacramento Business Journal reports that 17 businesses have opened in the K Street area since November 2011, and even more are expected to open in the near future. As part of the development process, the downtown neighborhood will soon feature new signs and messages posted around the city to rebrand the community.

Signs that say "The Kay" or "Welcome to The Kay" may soon appear along K Street between 7th and 13th streets and J through L, the news source claims.

"'The Kay' is a historical reference to the way people used to spell out letters on addresses. J Street was often 'Jay Street,' and I Street would sometimes be 'Eye Street.'" Lisa Martinez told the news source. "We're not renaming the street, but are giving context to this district and creating synergy."

The new community-branding initiative is supposed to take effect immediately, and brochures and various materials will be printed with the new community moniker.

Sacramento Council approves new gym
New businesses are setting up shop on K Street. The Sacramento Bee reports that the Sacramento City Council has approved the use of an iconic building along the avenue as a California Family Fitness center. In addition to getting the OK from officials for the lease, the gym was granted a parking validation, which could boost residents' ability to get to the establishment.

The gym will be at 1012 K Street - adjacent from the Dive Bar/Pizza Rock/District 30 entertainment complex, according to the news source. The full-size fitness center aims to target young professionals and new residents to the community with its variety of services and rooftop lounge.
