Determining property tax logistics in Manteca
As someone who has recently purchased one of the homes for sale in Manteca, CA, it's important to know what you're getting into in regard to tax payments. While the state of California and the federal government will collect the majority of your taxes, property taxes and certain other levies are the purview of San Joaquin County and Manteca itself.
Property taxes are collected by the Office of the Treasurer-Tax Collector in nearby Stockton (the seat of San Joaquin County). All property owners must pay secured taxes according to the stipulated deadlines, and those who own businesses or certain items (boats and aircrafts) must also pay unsecured taxes.
Additionally, properties that have recently undergone a transfer of ownership (such as yours) or experienced new construction are subject to various supplemental taxes. These can be either secured or unsecured.
Finally, the county requires a levy of 0.50 percent to support the San Joaquin Transportation Authority, and the city of Manteca collects a Public Safety Transactions and Use Tax with an identical rate. The California State Board of Equalization states that Manteca's overall tax rate in November 2011 stood at 8.25 percent.
