The metro made Yahoo Finance’s "8 Cities with Surprising Job Growth" list in June 2012. According to the source, the city is expected to experience 12 percent job growth in the next five years, or add an estimated 130,000 new positions. The spark in job creation is largely associated with the area’s plethora of small to medium-size tech firms. However, the tech industry is not the only market posting new employment growth - businesses such as Nike, Adidas, Columbia Sportswear and others are also hiring.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s monthly employment report states that there was a 2.6 percent increase in professional and business service jobs for May 2012 compared to May 2011 in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Oregon-Washington areas. Overall, the total nonfarm employment opportunities increased 1.9 percent in May 2012 from one year prior to 1,007,100.
