City of Houston recognized by national business organization

Houston is popular for a number of reasons, including its attractions, entertainment and jobs. Additionally, a national business organization recently found that the City of Houston provides plenty of opportunities to local residents, and recognized this institution for its achievements.

The National Association for Business Resources (NABR), which represents small and mid-size companies, recently named the local government as one of Houston's best and brightest employers. This honor is given to groups that display a commitment to excellence in their employee enhancement and human resource practices, and it shows that the City of Houston stands out among employers nationwide.

“I am very proud of this recognition," Houston Mayor Annise Parker said in a statement. "It means the work of our Human Resources employees, under the leadership of [City of Houston Human Resource Director] Omar Reid, is paying off."

What does the award mean for Houston residents?
Many residents consider Houston to be a great place to live, and the NABR's recognition demonstrates that the local government provides an excellent workplace. Other employers may try to follow in the City of Houston's footsteps by improving their practices, which could draw more people to the area.

For example, DHL, a global market leader in the logistics industry, set up a Houston showroom last month. The Houston Business Journal notes that the company established the facility to increase its offerings to energy companies.

"This is a showroom, which is there to highlight our capabilities of our company in the energy business," Steve Harley, global president of DHL’s energy sector, told the news source. "The aim is to position ourselves as a leader in energy logistics."

DHL employs roughly 275,000 workers across the globe, and could hire local residents to fill vacancies at its new showroom. This may help lower the area's unemployment rate, which was 7.5 percent in July 2012, and improve the local economy.

Employment opportunities help attract people to cities and towns throughout the country. If more jobs become available, newcomers could make their way to the area and may consider some of the homes for sale in Houston.

Additionally, interest in the region could lead to new competition for existing businesses, which could bring out the best for current and new companies in the area.
